On the weekend of February 2-4, 2018, the RMD held its second COTS Plus. In past years COTS, which started out as Chapter Officer Training School, but then changed to Chapter Operations Training School, had been held within each District. However, with budget cuts, the RMD launched the Leadership Academy. A few years ago, people within the District wanted more in-depth training, covering all areas of chapter operations. That’s where the Plus part comes in – covering several different disciplines other than officer training.
Under the planning and direction of Chapter Support and Leadership Training (CSLT) VP Brett Foster, and ably assisted by Dallin Hill and Michael Nogrady, some of the finest facilitators from within the District and Society met to share with, and learn from, that gathered Barbershoppers, all of whom wanted to learn more about being successful chapters. Instructor/facilitators included Alan Lamson, former BHS President and Interim CEO, Ken Galloway from the Evergreen District, Antonio Lombardi, representing the Society, Johnny Bugarin, John Coffin, Andy Syme, Lee Taylor, Mark Palmer and John Elving, all from the RMD.
In all, there were 15 chapters represented from within the RMD–about half of the total chapters. Attendees had instruction offered in all the basic offices held in any chapter, plus (this is the PLUS part) informative sessions in show team basics/selling out your show, Denver’s “Ready Set Sing” program, general leadership, directors roundtables, Outstanding in Front basics, Bringing a song to Life, etc.
The entire weekend was cut a little short due to inclement weather forcing some of the faculty to have travel plans changed by the airlines. However, it all culminated as usual in the beginning stages of a Chapter Planning Activity so that each chapter represented could get a head start on their 1, 3, and 5 year plans incorporating what they had learned over the weekend.
Now we will be going back to the Leadership Academy model for at least two years. Look for information about those coming up toward the end of the year.
