Barbershop Chapters are always looking for ways to reach their audience and serve their communities. The Ogallala members enjoy all types of music, but gospel music is one of our favorites. And there are so many wonderful barbershop arrangements of spirituals!
In past summers we spent a Sunday morning going to area churches to be their “special music.” But those mornings took a lot of planning (try coordinating times we could sing at five services), much driving, and not all our members could be absent from their own church services to perform with us.
Last year we decided to try organizing a community event called “An Evening of Gospel Music.” We contacted area churches and invited them to send a praise team, a choir, a small group to perform a couple of songs. Our Chamber of Commerce already sponsored a Thursday evening music series in its downtown pavilion. We asked them to let our evening be the Thursday before the series started and to include us in their publicity. They also provided the sound system and the platform. One church volunteered to serve hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks for free.
Last year’s evening was such a success that we were asked to make this an annual event. This year we added an audience hymn singalong, and the audience wants us to do that again.
It’s a great way for us to give back to our communities and to share our enjoyment of those wonderful spirituals.
